Oliver Mariager

Bio

biography.png

Oliver spent his formative years in London. An early interest in drawing, watching cartoons and animations naturally led to the exploration of the art form. A self-taught neurodivergent animator, Oliver learned new skills and techniques and became engrossed in storytelling and the wonderful use of animation in conveying moods in visual motion.

Through dedicated exploration at home, in clubs and education, he taught himself to use Moho to produce short films. Oliver quickly became proficient in more creative applications, including Adobe Photoshop, Animate CC, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro and Krita.

Oliver was always obsessed with the comedic, slapstick Warner Bros. cartoons, which inspired his art style and storytelling. Recognising the power of animation to communicate, he produced short films to raise awareness of the struggles of neurodivergent people. He writes, animates and directs his own short films. From 2019 to 2024, he worked collaboratively with Young Animators Club on campaign films and promotional animations for community projects and local businesses.

In 2020, he was commissioned by Screen South and the BBC as part of the New Creatives South East programme. The production of the commissioned short film, "Sensory Chaos", was a satisfying creative process with an opportunity to be mentored by Visual Explainer Ali Assaf, a potential catalyst for further opportunities and collaborations within the creative industry. The animation portrays Oliver’s experience of anxiety in the hope that it gives support to the spotlight on mental health.

Oliver hopes to make more connections and meet other animators, continue to develop skills, and be commissioned to produce animations to a brief professionally.
